The Crucible, Alternate/Extended Ending

Proctor: (Proctor rips up contract) “I rufuse to rat out my friends, I’m sorry Danforth”

Danforth: “Then you must be hung. Are you fine with that?”

Proctor: “Not exactly.”

Proctor then sends Danforth flying with one quick blow to the chest with his palm. Paris lunges at Proctor, but John easily brings Paris to the ground and with a hard swing to his face, Paris was out cold. While Elizabeth was screaming for John to stop, John runs off in the distance heading for his house, where his horse was.

When Proctor arrived at his house, Reverend Hale was there waiting for him. On a horse of his own.

Hale: “I’m here to accompany you on your next journey.”

Proctor: “You realize you’re risking your life by coming with me, right?”

Hale: “I know what I’m getting into.”

Proctor: “Good. Lets go then.”

Hale: “Alright lets hit the road. (pause) Oh and John?”

Proctor: “Yeah?”

Hale: “This isn’t my first rodeo.”

Proctor and Hale ride off into the distance and keep moving until they fall upon a Native American Indian hunting a buffalo. They watch him hunt and can tell he is very experienced. They befriend the Native American and soon find out his name; Standing Bull. Standing Bull takes Proctor and Hale back to his campsite and let them stay the night. They end up living with Standing Bull for about a week and in that time, he teaches them both how to hunt and kill with a bow and arrow. He also teaches them how to properly throw a tomahawk. Proctor and Hale are now killing machines. Proctor asks Standing Bull if he would join them in their quest back to Salem to finish off Danforth and his goons. Standing Bull respectfully declines and wishes them both good luck.

Proctor and Hale set off for Salem but it gets dark when they are deep in the woods. Nevertheless, the two friends set up camp and packed it in for the night. Proctor set up the tepee that Standing Bull had made for them.

Proctor: “Thank God for Standing Bull.”

Hale: “True that.”

They were both asleep when a grizzly bear made his way through their campsite. Scavenging everything they had. Proctor woke up and peered outside the tepee. The bear didn’t see him but John was frightened at what he saw. He quickly grabbed the tomahawk from under his pillow and jumped out of the tepee, surprising the bear. Proctor threw the tomahawk directly at the bear’s head, extremely accurate, just like Standing Bull had taught him.

Hale: (stepping outside) “What was tha- holy cow! Is that a bear!?!?”

Proctor: “Yeah, it was rummaging through our things, so I killed it.”

Hale: “Are you sure its dead?”

Proctor: “Haha, am I sure.”

The next morning the two men set off for Salem once again. They arrived and hid their horses behind what used to be John Proctor’s house. They equipped themselves with their bow’s and headed towards the church, for it was Sunday morning and everyone in town was there. They barged open the door and shot two arrows right away at two guards posted just inside the doors of the church. They were both dead instantly dude the arrows hitting both of them directly in the heart. Everyone stood frozen at what had just occurred.

Danforth: “What the hell are you two doing here! What have you done to those poor men!”

Proctor: “We’ve come to kill you Danforth!”

Danforth: “So be it. Guards!”

Three guards came from behind where Danforth was standing and they each had a sword. Proctor quickly took out his tomahawk and threw it right into the head of one of the guards. Then Hale shot an arrow aiming for Danforth’s chest, but hitting him in the shoulder and Danforth cried out for mercy.

Hale: “God can’t help you now.”

As Proctor was preoccupied with the two other guards, Hale loaded up another arrow and shot again at Danforth, this time hitting him right between the eyes with an instant kill.

Proctor: “Good job Hale! Now come help me!”

Hale hucked his tomahawk at one of the guards an it stuck into his back, and he cried out it pain. Proctor finished him off and then got put into a headlock by the last guard. Hale pulled out another arrow, aimed, and released hoping to not hit his friend. He heard a yell and saw the guard drop like a fly. Proctor fell to the ground and rubbed his neck trying to breathe.

Proctor: “Thank you Hale.”

Hale: “I told you John, this isn’t my first rodeo.”

That ends the story of the Salem witch trials. It all started with some girls dancing in the forest, but in the end it was all about courage and friendship, for that will always prevail over the evil, misguided behavior of Mr. Danforth.

Poem 1: Hysteria
I am John Proctor there is hysteria all around.

The community is getting torn apart because of one.
That Abigail Williams, I should have known that she
is rotten to the bone. I have a hidden sin that needs to
be shared, it may be the only thing that will set my wife
free. Oh this hysteria must come to an end otherwise
all hell could break loose. But I think it already has.

Poem 2: Accusations, Confessions and Legal Proceedings, oh my!
Where to go? Where to hide? All these accusations, confessions
and legal proceedings, oh my! What that didn’t happen! I never did such
a thing, you are a liar I have to say! I can’t take any more accusations,
confessions and legal proceedings, oh my! My head is spinning
I feel like I have to confess. Turns out I’m making an accusation, confessing and
in legal proceedings, oh my what did I do.

Poem 3: See
Oh John Proctor how I love you so. Why can’t you be mine?
That evil wife of yours needs to go and I will do so, just wait you see! Come to me
now John Proctor or I swear I’ll do something you’ll hate, just wait you see. I need to
be with you or I will surely die. I am more clever than you ever realize and my
plan is flawless, just wait you see. When I am determined I
always get ever so far. You will be mine one day, just wait you see.
What’s that I saw the devil with Goody Proctor? Oh I’m ever so clever and now you can see.

The Crucible Glog-Lust

Henry Ross: Literary Review

Arthur Miller’s historical fiction work, The Crucible, passionately describes a darker side of American history and how a town was changed by witchcraft and hysteria. Author Miller shows similarities to his dealings with McCarthyism in The Crucible and loosely relates the two. The story takes place in Salem, Massachusetts in 1692 during the forefront of the witch trials and spiritual uncertainty. This story describes how the roots of a well functioning town are changed when a group of girls are caught practicing “witchcraft” and how these “devilish” events sweep through the town causing hysteria and panic. The Crucible is centered around the accusations of many innocent townspeople by local enemies and the effect the court proceedings had on the town of Salem. Author Miller’s work goes far beyond a story of gloom as you begin to see how the witch accusations deteriorate the morals that the townspeople desperately held onto and how strong held beliefs are shattered. It is more than a story of treachery, but of how revenge, lust, jealousy, and betrayal dictate a society. Through the use of vivid language, strong imagery, deep characterization, and distinct diction, Miller conveys the thematic concepts of intolerance, reputation, and how far humans will go to save their own skin. I would recommend The Crucible to young adults/adults who enjoy historical fiction from the colonial era and who are interested in reading about how tragic events affect the morals and motivation of ordinary people.
